Telco Giants Beware: The Cloud is Circling |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Next to cable bills, phone bills are one of the cost centers about which I hear people complain the most. And that should actually be a rather ominous sign for telecommunications providers. Cable may still be popular, but Netflix, Hulu, Internet pirating, and other services have all taken a bite out of the cable companies' revenue. Unless telcos learn to compete, they will have to face the same sort of challenge from cloud-powered VoIP companies. The standard AT&T small business phone plan (unlimited local and long-distance calling) costs about

Leveraging VoIP and SIP to Provide Cheap Phone Service |
|
| |
|
|
| |
If your clients are anything like mine, most of them pay much more in telecommunications costs than they have to. It's not uncommon for even very small businesses (say, 3-5 employees) to pay $100 to $200 per month in "landline" bills. With traditional telco giants, it's not uncommon to pay $50 per month for a single line with only the most basic of features.
My preferred approach (as opposed to turnkey partner programs or setting up your own telephony server and purchasing DID SIP numbers wholesale) is setting up and administering a Skype communications network. For clients we have set up on Skype, we do the following:

This is Joseph filling in for Harry in this month's edition of SMB Voice.
If you're reading this, I'm probably preaching to the choir, but I wanted to take a moment to examine the rapid growth of the SMB VoIP market and talk a bit about its future.
First off, a recent SMB channel supply and demand survey by Techaisle found a gap between small business demand for VoIP services and the number of IT solution providers supporting them. Specifically, gaps existed for hosted VoIP and for both audio and video conferencing. I remember when other IT services, like BDR and CRM, started to get hot. VARs, MSPs, and consultants around the country jumped at the chance to provide and support these services. These same solution providers ought to be pouncing on the opportunity to provide communication services now.
In case anyone needs convincing, there's no shortage of companies betting on the cloud-powered voice and video communications revolution. To start, we have Microsoft's acquisition of Skype and Google's of Gizmo5 (now Google Voice). But beyond that, smaller companies like Sangoma and Chinook Communications—both of which have channel friendly reseller programs—are plowing ahead with VoIP, Lync, and other Internet communication products and services.
I think the channel works best when small business vendors work with small business solution providers to provide other small businesses with enterprise class solutions. And we definitely have that opportunity right now as the telecommunications sector transforms itself into just another IT service. We can wait for Verizon and AT&T to catch up with the small vendors that rely on the channel to stay in business. Or we can continue forging ahead and give Big Telco a run for its money.
I vote for forging ahead. |
